Make the most of the May bank holiday by spending it outside in your garden

As the May bank holidays have a reputation for being sunny, there is no better time to get your garden ready for the summer. No matter if, your garden is big or small, there are many ways to transform it into a usable alfresco area for you, your friends and family to soak in the sun.

Here are some alfresco area ideas for your outdoor area – and how to become the envy of all your neighbours!

1. The use of different types of surfaces for your outdoor area can make it more trendy too, whether you opt for decking, gravel or paving, complemented by a well-maintained garden area, (even if it is just a bit of grass or a couple of plant pots). Decking is certainly a more stylish option; however, the decision will ultimately depend on your budget. Combing different surfaces can also create a modern effect and is a good way to separate your seating area from the rest of your garden.

2. The use of colour and accessories can transform your garden. The use of mirrors can make your space look a lot bigger, as can using a colour such as green to paint the surrounding walls – particularly if you have a lot of plants as it will add to the natural greenery. A wall trellis is the perfect way to add some flowers to a small space or incorporate a focal point.

3. A covered barbeque and seating area is a perfect addition for the British summer, as you never know when a few light showers might appear. Domestic canopies will make your space usable, even if a few drops of rain appear.

4. A garden bench or some comfortable seating, (depending on how much space you have), will make your alfresco area more desirable and perfect for entertaining. If however you plan to use the space for outdoor dining, a table and chairs may be a more suitable option.

5. To make the area usable during the day and evening, add some citronella candles to help keep away the bugs. Planting mint or some marigolds near your seating area will also help keep insects abbey, as well sprinkling a few sprigs of sage or rosemary on your barbeques coals.

French doors and domestic canopies are the perfect complement to any home alfresco area that will not only transform the way you use your home, but also add living space and value to your home. Whether you choose to use your area for lazy sunny afternoons or nighttime entertaining, it is certainly a worthwhile investment.
